Preventing seniors' deconditioning in hospital

Deconditioning happens when someone’s physical or cognitive condition declines after a sedentary period or when under-stimulated intellectually or socially.

This can lead to many consequences such as balance problems, falls, malnutrition, delirium or increased risk of infection.

Rest and immobility are the worst enemies of maintaining autonomy.

 

Remain active!

Remain active! It is important to move about regularly while respecting your limits.

  • Get out of bed regularly
  • Have your meals sitting in a chair
  • When you have visitors, take advantage by walking around a bit
  • Look after your personal hygiene by yourself as much as possible
